Gary Wakefield was a Naval Officer and Helicopter pilot for over 21 years and served in Aircraft Carriers, and warships all over the world. After reading a Masters Degree and working in Corporate and Business Planning, he retrained himself as a Commercial Fixed Wing Pilot and now flies for an aerospace company in Dorset. Using his experience of leading and working in small teams, both on the ground and in the air, Gary subsequently specialised in delivering Crew Resource Management training to his own company and the Royal Navy.
His half day training module delivers a fascinating insight into the Human Factors that constitute effective teamwork taken from an aviation perspective. Some form of human failure is present in around 85% of all aircraft accidents and incidents. When aircrew working in a multi crew, multi discipline environment fail to perform as an effective team the result can be both catastrophic and often spectacular. In order to improve this aspect of flight safety the UK Civil Aviation Authority have now introduced well defined Human Factors training as well as the examination of all commercial pilots in this field. Given that we all work within organisations and teams of all shapes and sizes and the way we are lead and interact with each other often defines the nature of our achievements, this module looks at some of the theory behind the study of Human Factors and is linked together with personal experience as well as flying case studies of dramatic successes and failures. The module is an interactive training session which allows corporate teams the opportunity to analyse best practice in the field of team dynamics and reflect on their own performance against the standards and practices in Civil Aviation where failure to perform is not an option.
